Château Barbebelle
On land once cultivated by the Romans, surrounding an original 16th century château, lie the vineyards of Château Barbebelle. The estate consists of 300 hectares of protected nature, of which 45 hectares are planted with grapes; this is actually one of the oldest vineyards in Provence. This beautiful location, 16 kilometres north of Aix en Provence, has been home to the Herbeau family for four generations.
The new generation
Father Brice takes care of the wines and his daughter Madeleine is responsible for the business operations and sales. They do not always see eye to eye. As we often see with our wine producers, the new generation has ideas that the older generation does not fully agree with. A modern, hip label on the basic rosé, father Brice thought it was a particularly bad idea. Madeleine didn’t, but she got her way, with particularly enthusiastic reactions as a result…
Not just any rosé
We came across Château Barbebelle and knew immediately; we can’t ignore this. An undiscovered gem in Provence, you don’t come across that often. Wonderfully seductive rosé with a remarkable price-quality ratio, pure and versatile, but with structure and character. International recognition followed for the 2019 vintage, which was declared the best rosé in the world by Decanter! And then also in combination with the beautiful landscape, the wild boars between the sustainably cultivated vines, the classic family character and the exceptionally friendly people… well, this just makes us incredibly happy.
