Bodegas Tamerán

Jonatan García from Orotava, Tenerife, has been a celebrated winemaker for quite some time now and is known for his special wine estate Suertes del Marqués. His wines are loved by many wine lovers worldwide. Also in Manchester, where 3 years ago top footballer David Silva – then still a player for Manchester City, and a great wine lover – drank a glass of El Ciruelo 2016 from Suertes del Marques. He immediately fell in love with the wine, contacted Jonatan and they became friends. A while later, David, originally from Gran Canaria, heard that vineyards were for sale in the middle of the beautiful volcanic island. He asked Jonatan to take a look, he saw something in it and so it happened…

The first vintage 2020 was still made in a rented bodega and immediately scored well in the guides. From the 2021 vintage, the wines will be made in the new, beautiful bodega that was built next to the vineyards. They now make several blends together, but mainly wines from one grape variety. In this, the terroir comes into its own and you can taste the characteristics of the unique grape varieties of this place. The volcanic influence is somewhat more subtle than on Tenerife, but you still experience Jonatan’s signature; refined, complex flavors, lots of energy, a wonderful mouthfeel and fine acids. We are very proud of these new wines in our portfolio.

Bodegas Tamerán is located in a fantastically beautiful, idyllic spot in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, far above the sea, at an altitude of about 650 meters, surrounded by hills. The brand new wine cellar is located in the middle of the vineyards, which are laid out on narrow terraces because of the steep slopes. They are planted with different, sometimes only locally known grape varieties such as vijariego blanco, malvasía volcánica and marmajuelo, and are farmed organically. The soil consists of an ideal mixture of lime, sand, silt and a little clay.

Although the vineyards are located on the south and in the shelter of the hills, the altitude ensures that there is no overdose of sun and heat. Jonatan García also plays a role in this. For example, by harvesting on time – about three weeks earlier than usual in that location – and blocking the malolactic conversion, he ensures that the wines remain pleasantly light and refreshing. He and David Silva make a few blends, but mainly wines from a single grape variety. In these, the volcanic terroir comes into its own and you can taste the characteristics of the unique grape varieties from this location. These are wines that immediately scored high in guides such as the Guía Peñín, with their refined, complex flavors, a delicious mouthfeel and fine acids. David Silva made a good choice.
