Domäne Wachau

Domäne Wachau is a cooperative of around 250 families who collectively own more than 2,500 very small vineyard plots, covering a total of 440 hectares in the Wachau. This represents about one-third of the entire region. In recent years, significant investments have been made in the winery, allowing for the production of even higher-quality wines.

Craftsmanship, terroir, and precision are the core values of Domäne Wachau, led by Roman Horvath MW and Heinz Frischengruber. Respect for nature and the soil is at the heart of the hard work carried out by the winegrowers in the steep, terraced vineyards. With more than 160 hectares of organic vineyards, Domäne Wachau is Austria’s leading winery in terms of organically managed vineyards.

The vineyards are divided into small parcels and are primarily cultivated by hand. Each grower maintains an average of less than two hectares of vines. Many families have passed down their expertise through generations, resulting in a deep knowledge of their vineyards and an uncompromising focus on each individual plot. This is a next-generation wine cooperative, unlike any other in the world.

The wines of Domäne Wachau reflect their grand terroir, offering an unmistakably pure style with both depth and freshness. They are partly spontaneously fermented and made with minimal sulfite additions. Wachau provides ideal conditions for terroir-driven wines from exceptional vineyards such as Achleiten, Brandstatt, and Kellerberg.

Winemaker Heinz Frischengruber knows each plot personally. The winegrowers harvest their steep vineyards in multiple rounds, exclusively by hand. No herbicides or pesticides are used. On the contrary, every effort is made to promote the diversity of flora and fauna, ensuring a better ecological balance on the Wachau terraces. Thanks to these guiding principles, Domäne Wachau is recognized as a sustainability leader for the entire region.

In addition to highly expressive single-vineyard wines (ried), Domäne Wachau offers the Backstage series of distinctive natural wines. These adventurous wines are aged in amphorae, concrete, and stone—far from the traditional Wachau style.

Domäne Wachau was named Falstaff Winemaker of the Year 2024 and is a top destination for wine lovers from around the world. The estate offers a wide range of events, vineyard and winery tours, a seasonal Heuriger (wine tavern) at the Kellerschlössel, unique culinary experiences, and a tasting room directly at the winery.
