Félix Lorenzo Cachazo
The Lorenzo Cachazo family has been making wines for 6 generations and in 1946 Bodegas Félix Lorenzo Cachazo was founded.
From municipal cellars to modern bodega
In 1993, Félix Lorenzo and his wife Rita Heras built the current modern bodega according to their own wishes. Stainless steel tanks, temperature control, presses, laboratory; everything is spaciously designed and exudes quality, passion and dedication. A second extension was realized in 2014, now also with room for a beautiful tasting room and more production capacity. The original bodega is a story in itself. In the middle of the old center of Pozaldez, several cellars from the 18th century came together underground. And there are still large wine barrels at a depth of 40 meters.
Love for the area
In 1980, on the initiative of Félix together with 7 other wine producers, the DO Rueda was founded, which gave their beloved verdejo grape recognition. With the establishment of the DO, the great change in style also became a fact. Traditionally, this area was mainly used to make Amontillados, a Sherry-like, oxidized wine. Nowadays, the wines from Rueda are especially loved for their fresh, aromatic and juicy style. The family business is now in the hands of son Eduardo and daughter Ángela, the current winemaker of the family. Of the vineyards, 35 hectares are in their own possession and in addition they supervise another 190 hectares of farmers with whom even grandfather worked. The portfolio now consists of a range of modern wines such as the popular ‘Caballero de Olmedo’, a seductive blend of verdejo and viura, the 100% verdejo ‘Carrasviñas’ and the ‘Carrasviñas Fermentado en Barrica’, the verdejo fermented and matured in wood. In order to honour the traditional style of winemaking, Ángela still makes the nostalgic wine Carrasvinas Dorado, a very complex, dry blend of verdejo and palomino fino with a very high intensity and a wonderful accompaniment to umami dishes.
Pre-phylloxera vineyards
There are some areas in the DO Rueda with sandy soil, where the phylloxera phylloxera louse cannot live. Some vineyards are therefore more than 150 years old and are therefore among the oldest in Europe. The family is the proud owner of 9 hectares of these exceptional pre-phylloxera vineyards, which are grown organically. The grapes from these vineyards are only used for the Carrasviñas wines and give them that exceptional complexity and structure. This gives them a strong authentic character that makes them praised far beyond the country’s borders. But also in Spain of course. Both daughters of the Spanish king Juan Carlos served the Cachazo wines at their wedding and our Marcel at his!
